NNP CHINGAZA

Chingaza Natural Park

Chingaza is one of the most beautiful paramos (Moorlands) in the world, conserving several lagoons that were sacred for the ancestor indigenous Muiscas. Most of the water consumed by Bogota´s inhabitants come from this magnificent place since it has been characterized as one of the purest in the world. You can also observe a high flora and wildlife diversity, typical of this environment. During the visit we will perform bird and wildlife watching, observing animals like deers, and condors during our quiet hikes along the cloud forest. Chingaza is 1 hour northeast from Bogota. The main activities to do at Chingaza are the deer watching at the Sua Sie Trail and the visit to the sacred Siecha Lagoons

Deers and wildlife watching at Chingaza

Sua - Sie Trail

At the Andean cloud forest and the Chingaza´s paramos, a unique natural system is found. These forests are natural water factories, working 24 hours per day, every day, all year round. The mechanism is based on the movement of the fog which caresses the mountains and lets on them small water drops, which get fixed in the little leaves of natural vegetation, like moss and lichens.

We are in front of a small universe natural show. Those little drops move downhill from the mountain and get together to create fine water strings, which form creeks that feed the lagoons, ending their path in bigger rivers. Immense forests where peace and silence is breathed. Music is composed by the song of the tangaras, eagles, the wind and the mist.

Siecha Lagoons

El Dorado legend

Just one hour away from Bogota we can find this amazing water factory. A natural, perfect, alive and active system: The Chingaza Paramo.

For the Muiscas, Chingaza was a sacred temple. At their lagoons, they practiced incredible rituals, as the Dorado.

From the Siecha Lagoons were a sacred spot, they drew imaginary lines connecting the solstice sun and the equinox. Align to these lines they built the towns along the Sabana. Chia, Cajica, Suesca, La Calera, Bacata (Bogota) and all the ancestral towns at the sabana are astronomically align to those lines, and nowadays are important towns of the region. Even the catholic temples built at the towns are located at the same spot where the indigenous adored the sun, water, wind, frogs, eagles, clouds, to all the Pacha Mama.

The sacred Siecha Lagoons is a place to hike around, contemplate in silence and find yourself. It is a sacred natural temple, where several flora and wildlife species live, like deers, eagles, and ancient frailejones.

Muiscas were exterminated by the spaniards, who made disappear a cosmogenic culture, with an enviable life philosophy filled with love to the Pacha Mama.
